We list opening sizes because that’s the standard way hermit crab shells are measured and compared, but we completely understand how depth and shape can affect the overall fit. These shells are natural products, so even within the same type, sizing can vary slightly.
It’s also worth noting that many of our small shells are used for marine hermit crabs and baby land hermit crabs, which have smaller body sizes. In this case, it sounds like your crabs are just on the larger end, so the shells you received were simply too small for them — not incorrect, just not the right match.
As for our return policy, our items are low-cost natural products, the cost of shipping and handling a return would often exceed the product value. That’s why we can’t accept returns simply for sizing or preference reasons. That said, we always do our best to resolve any issues or concerns and make things right where possible.
