Frequently Asked Questions

🐚 Shell Sizing & Fit

How do I measure my hermit crab’s shell size correctly?

Measure the shell opening at the widest point of the lip, from inside edge to inside edge. Keep the calipers right at the outer rim of the opening.

Do not insert the calipers deep into the shell cavity. The opening narrows as you go inward, which gives a smaller and incorrect measurement.

Why does measuring deeper inside the shell give a smaller size?

Shell openings taper as they go inward. If you measure too far inside, you lose several millimeters of width. This often results in ordering shells that are too small for your crab.

Always measure at the outer lip only.

What if I am between sizes?

When in doubt, size up slightly.

If your measurement falls between two sizes, choose the larger opening. A slightly larger shell is generally preferred over one that is too tight.

Should I order the exact same size my crab is currently wearing?

Measure your crab’s current shell carefully to confirm the opening size. Many crabs prefer a slightly larger opening than what they are currently wearing.

We recommend offering at least one shell that matches their current size and one that is slightly larger.

What happens if the shell opening is too small?

If the opening is too small, your crab may:

• Be unable to fully retreat
• Reject the shell
• Experience unnecessary stress

Proper sizing increases the chances of a successful shell change.

How accurate does my measurement need to be?

Very accurate. Even a 2–3 mm difference can affect fit. Take your time, measure carefully, and double-check before ordering.

Should I buy more than one shell?

Yes. Hermit crabs prefer having options. We recommend offering at least 3–5 appropriately sized shells per crab to encourage natural shell changing behavior.

Are your shells safe for hermit crabs?

Yes. Our shells are natural and suitable for hermit crab use. We recommend rinsing with dechlorinated water before placing them in your enclosure.

Are the shells polished or treated?

Product descriptions will indicate the finish. If using for hermit crabs, we recommend natural, polished or unpainted shells.
